Because she quickly skipped through the page that informed her of the restocking fee - that I just happened to catch - I've got to believe this is store policy not to stop and explain that fee when the cashier sees the notification. Harbor Freight has lost me as a customer for, what I consider, to be deceitful practices. I will gladly pay more elsewhere than support Harbor Freight.
Great has just about anything you need
Found everything we need and our cashier, Kathryn, was wonderful!
I looked at the generator and an informational tag said it had a free 90 day trial period. Nothing written about return fees.

Chance 5 for at least a response:
A new 2016 store. They have the best cheap tool selection. Good sales. Guaranteed. Poor parking area if you have a trailer.
Chance 4:
I told her I wouldn't be making the purchased as I should have been informed of this fee when I asked about return policies or when the screen flashed up. She just looked at me and said nothing. I walked out leaving several items behind including a $500 generator. As I left she called back to the person getting it that, "She's not getting it. She changed her mind" as if I had really put them out.
Harbor Freight did not inform me of a 20% restocking and return freight fee when I asked pointed questions about their return policy for a generator. My issue is not that they have the policy but that I was not told about it multiple times.
I told her I wanted it and just happened to look at her screen as she entered the item and was startled when a page came up that said this item was subject to a restocking fee. She quickly hit a button that moved on from the screen without mentioning it. If I hadn't seen it in the split second it was up, I never would have known.
I went in fully prepared to purchase a $500 generator but also knowing I might have to return it if my brother didn't like it. On my way in I asked the cashier (long blond hair) if I could return it. She hesitated then said it had a warranty. I said it was a gift and could it be returned if he didn't like it. She responded that it could be returned within 90 days. I again asked if it was "no questions asked". She said it would help if I had a receipt but it wasn't required. Note: no mention of this steep restocking & freight fee.
I asked her stop ringing up other items and tell me about the fee and she said it is often something like $20. When I got home I looked up the policy and for generators it is 20% plus return freight. That's $100 for the fee plus freight that I was never told about.
